Like theft, robbery is an offence that involves stealing or the intention to steal. What makes it different from theft is the additional element of real or threatened violence. It is the element of violence that makes robbery a much more serious offence that generally attracts more significant sentences.

A robbery need not involve a weapon, but it is an aggravating circumstance where it does. In fact, where a prohibited or restricted firearm is used, or any firearm is used and the robbery is committed in association with a criminal organization, there are escalating mandatory minimum jail sentences.

Though a different offence, extortion is a close cousin to robbery. Extortion involves the use of threats, accusations, menaces or violence to induce another person to do something. Like robbery, it may or may not involve weapons, but when it does, the penalties become increasingly serious.
